Abdikadir H. Mohamed
Mr. Abdikadir was among the founding members of the first Islamic Bank to be licensed in Kenya, the First Community Bank in 2008. He served as a board member of the bank and continues to be part of efforts to initiate reforms and changes conducive to the growth and development of Islamic finance industry in Kenya.
Abdikadir currently serves as the Senior advisor, Constitutional and Legislative Affairs’ in the Executive office of the Kenyan President and also served as the Co-Chair of the Presidential Taskforce on Parastatal Reforms in 2013.
Between 2007 and 2013, he served was a Member of Parliament for Mandera Central Constituency and was instrumental in spearheading the Parliamentary process of developing the Constitution of Kenya 2010 in his capacity as the Chair of the Parliamentary Select Committee. He holds a Masters in Law from Harvard University and Bachelors degree in law from the University of Nairobi.
He undertakes legal practice under his firm, Abdikadir & Associates based in Nairobi. He serves as a board Chair and member of diverse business entities in Kenya and the region.
Prof. Essajee is a renowned academic in the field of accounting specialized in financial accounting and reporting with solid experience. He has in the past served on both the Professional Standards Committee and the Disciplinary Committee of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).
He is a lecturer at the School of Business-University of Nairobi where he teaches and supervises both undergraduate and post-graduate students. He previously lectured at the United States International University (USIU) Africa where he headed the Accounting & Finance Department. Prof. Essajee is a Consultant and trainer in financial accounting, analysis and Islamic Finance within the Eastern Africa Region.
He is an influencail leader in Islamic banking and finance in Kenya and co-founder and a non-executive director of First Community Bank (FCB). He served as Executive Director in charge of support and control and later as the Managing Director of FCB. Prof. Essajee is currently the Chairman of the board of Vision Institute of Professionals, (An accredited Accountancy and ICT training institution)
in Kenya and was also a co-founder of the same. He is an alumni of Price Waterhouse Coopers, a member of the Institute of Directors of Kenya and a board member of Amana Bank of Tanzania.
Mr. Kanyeki is a Senior Partner at Swaleh, Mwangi & Company Advocates. He previously served as a Sharia Board member at the Gulf African Bank Limited, one of the pioneer Islamic banks in Kenya.
Swaleh holds a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB – Common Law and Sharia) from the University of Khartoum and a Diploma from the Kenya School of Law. He also holds Master of Laws degree in International Legal Practice from the University of Law (formerly the College of Law) in the United Kingdom.
He has previously worked as a Director - Legal Affairs as well as Senior Legal Counsel at Emirates Telecommunications Corporation – Etisalat where among other roles he acted as the in-house main counsel in the establishment by Etisalat of multi-currency Global Medium Term Note Program (the GMTN Program) and Sukuk Program. It was during tenure at Etisalat that the GMTN and Sukuk bond were listed in the London Stock Exchange.
Sheikh Badru is a prominent Islamic Finance Shariah scholar in East Africa. He is a Shariah
auditor and advisor Certified by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial
Institutions (IOFI), an Islamic finance global standard setting body based in Bahrain. He currently
serves on the Shariah board of Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) and Takaful Insurance Africa.
n often sought out speaker and Shariah expert, he has advised both governmental and nongovernmental organizations on Shariah compliance in various projects in Kenya such as the Ministry of Industrialization and Enterprise Development as well as Islamic Relief organization of the United Kingdom.
Sheikh Badru has a Masters in Islamic Banking and Management from
the Marksfield Higher Education Institute, validated by the University of Gloucestshire, U.K and a B.A in the Hadeeth Sciences from Madina University Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Sh. Badru brings a wealth of both local and international experience from the Islamic finance industry.
Jaafar S. Abdulkadir
Mr. Jaafar is the Managing Director of Aqeel Consulting Limited. He has a solid banking
experience spanning over two decades. He established the KCB Islamic banking unit and was
also part of the team that set up the KCB South Sudan subsidiary over a decade ago. Jaafar is
quite knowledgeable in business development, project management, governance, leadership,
risk management, operations, sales and marketing among others.
He holds a BA degree in Development studies from Kimmage Development Centre-Ireland,
Diploma in Micro-finance from Strathmore University, Diploma in Islamic banking and Insurance from the London Institute of Islamic banking and Finance as well as a Postgraduate certificate in Social entrepreneurship from the Colorado State University.
He also has a certificate in Islamic Finance from INCEIF University Malaysia and Masters degree in Public Policy and Management from the Strathmore Business School. Jaafar is a trainer and a speaker in both local and global forums and offers thought leadership in banking, finance, leadership and management. He writes regularly articles and oppinions in the Kenyan newspapers and other international publications.
